Can You Store This? What’s Allowed (and Not Allowed) in a Legal, AB Storage Unit

When you’re renting a self-storage unit, it’s normal to wonder: “Can I store this?”

The truth is, most items are totally fine — but there are a few key things that can’t go into your unit, either for legal, safety, or cleanliness reasons.

At Legal Self Storage, we like to keep things simple and clear for our Alberta customers. So here’s a quick breakdown of what you can store, what you shouldn’t, and why it all matters.

What You Can Store

These are some of the most common (and totally acceptable) items in our storage units:

  • Furniture and household items (sofas, mattresses, appliances)

  • Seasonal gear (snowblowers, lawnmowers, skis, tents)

  • Business inventory (boxes, tools, promotional displays)

  • ATVs, small trailers, and RVs (in our outdoor parking area)

  • Toys, clothing, books, electronics, décor

  • Tools and construction equipment

Basically, if it’s dry, non-perishable, and not dangerous — you’re good.

What You Can’t Store (and Why)

1. Food or perishables

Anything that spoils can attract pests and create odors. Even pet food or canned goods should stay out of your unit.

2. Flammable or hazardous materials

That includes gasoline, propane, fireworks, paint thinner, or anything labeled combustible. It’s not just a policy — it’s the law.

3. Illegal items

If it’s illegal to possess (stolen goods, unlicensed weapons, etc.), it’s illegal to store.

4. Live animals or plants

No pets, no insects, no aquariums, and no potted plants. Storage units aren’t designed for living things.

5. Wet items or leaky appliances

Anything that could drip or cause mold (like a fridge you forgot to dry out) should be thoroughly cleaned and dried before storing.

Bonus Tip: Don’t Guess — Just Ask

We’re always happy to answer questions before you move in. It’s way easier to check upfront than to move things twice or risk a policy violation.
